The Architecture Museum of Ljubljana (AML) is the central Slovene museum for architecture, town planning, industrial and graphic design, and photography. The museum systematically collects, stores, studies and presents material from these creative areas at temporary and permanent exhibitions. The museum was founded in 1972 by the City of Ljubljana. Until 1992 it was located at the architect Jože Plečnik’s house in Trnovo, a Ljubljana neighbourhood. After a partial renovation of Fužine Castle, most departments and the administration moved to the new location. The majority of the exhibition area accommodates the permanent exhibition about the architect Jože Plečnik, which was bequeathed to the museum by the George Pompidou National Centre of Art and Culture. In addition to the permanent display and areas for temporary exhibitions, the administration and most of the museum’s departments are based at Fužine Castle: the Department of Historical Architecture in Slovenia, Department of Contemporary Slovene Architecture, Department of Industrial Design, Department of Photography, Department of Visual Communications and Visual Design for Electronic Media.
The museum staff is preparing a permanent display of historical architecture and design, which after the completion of the castle's renovation will become the museum's main feature. The Secretariat of the Biennial of Industrial Design has been based at the museum since 1972. From 1988 to 2004 the museum managed the Jakopič Gallery.
The Plečnik collection is displayed at a separate AML location encompassing a complex of Plečnik houses at 4 and 6 Karun Street and the adjacent garden with a lapidarium on its southern edge. The building preserves the artist's home atmosphere with original furniture, personal possessions, an archive of his sketches, plans and models, Plečnik's library, his correspondence, photo archives, his students’ thesis projects and archives of Ognjišče akademikov arhitektov [Academy of Architecture Collection]. In Plečnik's house also operates a department of educational activites.
